When I am mentoring new agents or counselling agents who are disappointed or discouraged, I am often asked, “What should I do?”. They are actually asking “How do I get Started?” or “How do I get unstuck?”. My answer is obnoxiously simple to both questions. I tell them, it doesn’t matter. Just do SOMETHING. I give them buckets of options but the bottom line is it doesn’t matter what they do just that they do something.
Do you know people who research everything? Those who need to have all of the pieces before they can begin? I tell them STOP SHARPENING THE SAW AND START CHOPPING WOOD.
I hear, “But I don’t know what to do.” Again, BS, it doesn’t matter. You are trying to get traction, momentum. You just need to take a baby step, any step. Just a little nudge will get you going. Everyone has heard the phrase, “The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step.” Once you get started you can assess, test and measure, learn what you need to know, learn what is effective and authentic for your style. A wise mentor told me one time, “Do more of what makes you happy.” The first step is always the hardest, but it doesn’t have to be. Just stop overanalyzing.
Start from where you are. Visualize where you want to be and take a tiny step. If you want a better relationship, tell your spouse I LOVE your once a day. If you want to be healthier, start with drinking a glass of water when you get up in the morning. Rome was not built in a day and neither will your success or even the path to your goals be built quickly.
Tiny, miniscule, improvements build on each other like compound interest. You don’t need to improve by 20%. You need to improve many areas by 2%. 2x2x2x2x2=32%. Momentum is like a stone rolling down a hill. Give it a baby push and off it goes, faster and faster and faster. Commit to doing or improving one small thing each week and see where you end up. A small change in direction (activity) will determine the trajectory of your destiny.
Stuck or can’t start. Just do something, anything, that will break the inertia.
