My daughter sent me the best quote this week. The more I thought about it the more meaning it took for me. I had my TEAM at McCaffrey Professionals discuss it and also used it as a TABLE TOPIC for the Business Before Breakfast networking group that I facilitate for the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce.
At first glance the thought was, predatory, doing anything to succeed. Shark Tank has promoted this interpretation. Sharks, however, do not eat other sharks- except on that show. Sharks hunt to eat, with an occasional accidental chomp on an unlucky swimmer. I contend that these shark attacks are accidental mistakes. Of course I haven’t interviewed the culprits for confirming evidence.
In a very interesting discussion at my table with Peter Gerardi (Newtown Savings Bank Manager), Scott Farrell (Admissions Director at Naugatuck Valley Community College) and Rich Reynold (Realtor with the Realty One Group), the quote became inspirational. They pointed out that sharks KNOW their daily mission and prioritize their actions. They don’t procrastinate or get distracted. They keep their vision on their mission. It was pointed out that there are many distractions around them: plankton, small fish cleaning their skins, shellfish. The shark doesn’t pay attention but keeps their eyes on their target. It speaks to their focus. It is really about living with purpose and intentionality. When you do that “stuff gets done” and you are scary.
I know the night before what time I am getting up, what my morning routine looks like, and I have time blocked and prioritized my activities for the day. At the end of the day I feel accomplished and relaxed. I AM A SHARK.
