I am a written goal person. I know you have heard of the Harvard study that on the 25th reunion they did a survey of who had written goals. It turned out 20% of the attendees had written goals. The interesting thing was that those 20% accounted for 80% of the net worth. I do annual goals and 3 month goals but had never heard of 10 day goals until recently.
I was listening to one of my podcast that talked about CORNERSTONE behaviors. Those small additions to your life that make big changes. Brian Buffini, the podcast author, talked about how it is harder to stop a bad habit then it is to start a small, CORNERSTONE, habit. I saw this for myself over
the summer. Obviously I need to lose weight. As hard as I try I always fall off the wagon because or exhaustion, stress, or whatever excuse I tell myself. I made one change last April and have lost almost 30 pounds. It wasn’t about not eating sugar or carbs or exercising. The ONE thing I changed was getting on the scale every day. As horrible as that sounds it made me aware that the 3 pieces of Birthday cake I had eaten the night before REALLY made a difference. So that ONE CORNERSTONE behavior created other behaviors that I didn’t even have to think about. When I got close to a milestone…maybe close to a 5 pound mark….I would be especially diligent about not having sugar.
So the challenge that this presenter put forth was to identify those CORNERSTONE behaviors, habits, which would trigger a chain of positive behaviors and do them every day for 10 days. Sometime it would be to change a bad habit, finish a big project, improve relationships, or become a better person. In essence it is about personal growth, but in bite sized pieces. He recommended finding that ONE CORNERSTONE habit or behavior in each of 5 areas: FAMILY, HEALTH, SPRIITUAL (which I took to mean personal growth), BUSINESS and PERSONAL. Being the overachiever that I am I choose 2 in each area. I already see that is too many but will stick through this first ten days. At that time I will either continue with each CORNERSTONE behavior or make new ones.
To give you some idea of the things on my 10 days goals…write 3 personal note/day, drink 32 oz. of water before leaving the house, call a family member each day…small easy things but you can see how they would lead to massive improvements in various areas of my life. If you don’t make goals because you are always afraid you can’t meet them try these little 10 day goals. You can do anything for 10 days. Think of them as promises to yourself. Just as you wouldn’t go back on a promise to a friend, you shouldn’t go back on promises to yourself. It will also give you a sense of control when you feel out of control. Good luck.
